Wordless Wednesday: Holidays in Whitstable

This is a photo that I came across last week and just thought it would be good for Wordless Wednesday!  It is a bit faded but was taken circa 1960 and is of my maternal grandmother Lucy Sinclair (nee Dartnell), myself and my brother John at Whitstable, Kent where our grandmother always took us for a holiday. My brother Alan took the picture.

We always enjoyed our holidays in Whitstable and I have some very happy memories from those times.

Wordless Wednesday: Dad’s Shipmates in 1945

Filed under: DAILY BLOGGING THEMES, Wordless Wednesday — Tags: , , , , — rootsresearcher @ 11:27 pm

I have two photos taken in 1945 that have been passed to me by my Mum, of my Dad and his shipmates from when he was in the Merchant Navy during WWII.

My dear Dad is the second from the right as you look at this photo, but is not in the second photo.  I would love to find out what happened to his shipmates and just wonder how I would begin to search for them?  The third pic is of the reverse of the second photograph where four of Dad’s friends have signed it.

Wordless Wednesday: Edward John Dartnell

Edward John Dartnell is my great uncle.  There is not a lot to tell about him as he died aged 32 years old.  He was born in 1885 in Lambeth, Surrey and died in 1917 in Southwark, Surrey.

I somehow wish that I had asked my Grandmother about Edward while she was still with us.  No-one else in the family is alive who would have known him or anything about him.  I find this very sad.

Wordless Wednesday: Laity Family Gathering

This photo was taken just a few years ago, of the Laity Family Gathering at Perranuthnoe, Cornwall.  My partner Paul’s grandmother and great grandmother were Laitys.

These people came from America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and many other places as well as those from the UK.  It was wonderful!!

Wordless Wednesday: Day Trip on the Thames

This photo shows my grandmother who is clutching a handbag, Lucy Harriett Sinclair (nee Dartnell) (1883 – 1984  yes she lived for 101 years) with Mrs. Warnes.  For my Gran, Mrs. Warnes was like a second mother to her after her mother died when Gran was 14.

I know this was a day trip sailing on the River Thames but no idea when it was.  I love the clothes and hats!!  ;-)

Ooooooo, what’s this?
My dear Dad, Ken Read (1924 – 1982) in his garden with lifelong family friend Roy.  They had a great day with a metal detector and just may have found something!  This was in the 1970s.

Wordless Wednesday: Wedding Guests at Eastbourne – 1905

Filed under: DAILY BLOGGING THEMES, Wordless Wednesday — Tags: , , — rootsresearcher @ 10:44 pm

This pic was taken from a group photo of a wedding of a member of the Read family in Eastbourne, Sussex in 1905.  I think the character in the faces of these two people is wonderful!
