Descendants of Rachael READ (1741 – 1818 )

Generation No. 1

1. RACHAEL4 READ (COZENS3, WILLIAM2, JOHN1) was born 1741 in Nether Winchendon, Buckinghamshire, and died 05 Nov 1818 in Walworth, Surrey. She married FRANCIS FARMBROUGH 21 Apr 1766 in St. Mary Magdalene, Upper Winchendon, Buckinghamshire. He was born 28 Nov 1736 in Stone, Buckinghamshire, and died 26 Jan 1810 in Stone, Buckinghamshire.

Notes for FRANCIS FARMBROUGH:
In addition to the freehold estate in the parish of Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire which he inherited under his father’s Will, Francis re-purchased another estate in Aylesbury (26 November 1782) which had formerly belonged to his ancestors and there he took up residence until his death.

Children of RACHAEL READ and FRANCIS FARMBROUGH are:
i. ELIZABETH5 FARMBROUGH, b. 25 Mar 1768, Stone, Buckinghamshire; d. 29 Mar 1847, Bierton, Buckinghamshire; m. JAMES COOPER, 28 Oct 1798, St. Mary’s, Newington, Surrey; b. 25 May 1777, Marylebone, Middlesex; d. 09 Apr 1859, Bierton, Buckinghamshire.
2. ii. WILLIAM FARMBROUGH, b. 15 Jul 1777, Stone, Buckinghamshire; d. 17 Jul 1854, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.
Generation No. 2

2. WILLIAM5 FARMBROUGH (RACHAEL4 READ, COZENS3, WILLIAM2, JOHN1) was born 15 Jul 1777 in Stone, Buckinghamshire, and died 17 Jul 1854 in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. He married ANNA WATTS CHECKLEY 13 May 1802 in Lidlington, Bedfordshire, daughter of RICHARD CHECKLEY and MARY GIBBS. She was born 11 Jul 1780 in Lidlington, Bedfordshire, and died 29 Jan 1856 in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.

Notes for WILLIAM FARMBROUGH:
At some stage William occupied a farm at Whaddon Hill, Nr. Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire for some time. By 1905 the farm was in the occupation of Rowland Sare and the farm was much larger before 1905 (Notes from Rose Family Tree made in 1905 and held by Mrs. Margaret Rose of Eythrope Park Farm, Upper Winchendon, Buckinghamshire, shown to me when I visited her in April 2000).

William and his wife moved from Pytchley in Northamptonshire to Caddington Bury in Bedfordshire in September 1810. This move was most disastrous from a financial point of view. Owing to the long-continued French war, corn was at famine prices, and William took on lease a large tract of wheat-growing land at a very high rental at and near Caddington. When peace was declared in 1815, wheat fell at once to a very low price, but the leases had to be worked out, and William estimated his loss of capital from this cause at between £8,000 and £10,000. When they moved to Caddington they had five children, of whom Elizabeth was then only four months old. Seventy years afterwards those five children were all alive and well, and three of them lived to pass the limit of fourscore years.

William inherited his father’s Aylesbury property and took up residence there until his death. At the time of the 1851 Census, William and his wife Anna were living in Castle Street, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire and he is shown as working as a Malster.

Notes for ANNA WATTS CHECKLEY:
According to the notes in the Rose Family Tree held at Eythrope Park Farm, Upper Winchendon, Buckinghamshire, made in 1905 it states: “It was recorded by her (Anna Watts Farmbrough nee Checkley’s daughter Caroline) that she paid one guinea a year for thirty years as a tax for wearing powder in her hair”.
