Ancestor Anniversaries: Johnson Moyle and Sophia Laity

A second Ancestor Anniversary today, this time it is to remember the Wedding Day of the Grandparents of my partner Paul, Johnson Moyle and Sophia Laity on this day in 1894 at Helston Register Office, Cornwall.

Johnson was born in 1872 at Helston and died, also in May, in 1957 at Camborne, Cornwall.  His wife Sophia was also born in Helston in 1872 and died the same year, only a month or two apart from her husband, in 1957 at Blackwater, Cornwall.  And until I just typed these details here, I had not realised before that apart from a few months, Johnson and Sophia were the same age as each other almost exactly until their deaths!!

This is the main street in Helston, Coinagehall Street, during the 1800s

Obtained several years ago from the internet - copyright unknown but please let me know if it is yours!!

On his Birth Certificate Paul’s Grandfather is named Johnson Moyle, but by the time he marries Sophia, the Wedding Certificate shows his name as Johnson James Moyle.  We have no idea where the James came from, but Johnson’s Grandfather was called James, so maybe he adopted the name?

Johnson and Sophia had 5 children and although I don’t know roughly when this was, Johnson spent some time sparring on occasions with the famous Cornish Boxer Bob Fitzsimmons who was also born in Helston (1863 – 1917).

  1. I am related to Sophia Laity. Wondering if you happen to have any pictures of Sophia, her husband or kids that you are willing to share. I am the granddaughter of Herbert Howard Laity who was born in Camborne and moved to Canada in 1911. I have been working on my family tree with a cousin in England for a few years now. We certainly would love to share any other information pictures with you.

    • Hallo Charlene,

We are absolutely delighted to hear from you! My partner Paul is your cousin (I’m never sure quite how many times removed and whether it’s first cousin, second cousin and so on -but cousins you are).

I have a huge Laity family tree going way way back, which I will be happy to share with you. Sadly we have no pictures of Sophia or her husband Johnson Moyle, and only really have pics of their son Charles who is Paul’s late father.

If you click on the link to my Ancestors at Rest Graveyard Rabbit blog (on the right sidebar), you will be able to see the last resting place for Sophia and Johnson (along with Paul’s mother).

I will try to dig up some things to share with you and send them to your email (if that is the email address with your comment)?

I’ve just found this – your grandfather Herbert arrived in New York on the ship Philadelphia on 29th May 1910 in company with a few other people, on his route to Mohawk, MI.

Now you’ve found us, please keep in touch!

      Kind regards,
Christine (rootsresearcher) and your cousin Paul

      • oooops! Sorry Charlene, Sophia and Johnson’s last resting place is shown on this blog under Tombstone Tuesday, along with Paul’s mother Nora Moyle. (I have the two blogs and it seems I’m getting confused between them)!! 😉

        Kind regards,

  2. Thanks for the reply, yes, that is my proper email address. I look forward to a picture of Charles. Please let me know if there are any details of Herbert Howard’s family that you need for your tree. I have a lot of information and pictures. I also have a copy of the marriage certificate of Sophia Laity and Johnson James Moyle. Not sure if you already have that. If not, let me know how I can send it to you.

    • Hallo Charlene, great to hear from you again. Now I know that is your email address I will send details of a branch of the Laity tree that we have and if you see anything that needs adding re Herbert Howard and any of his part of the family, please let me know. We would love to see some Laity pictures, we don’t have any at all, only Charles Moyle with his mum being a Laity. We have a copy of Sophia and Johnson’s marriage cert, but thanks for the offer. I’ll get something off to you in the next couple of days or so.

      Kind regards,
      Christine and Paul

  3. Hi Christine & Charlene, we are related through Johnson’s brother Frederick Charles Moyle, who came to New Zealand with his wife Ellen Jane Manhire & 11 children in 1913.

I have been doing Mum’s side of the family for about 3 years & have gathered a lot of info.

I would be more than happy to share or help in any way I can.

    • Hallo Rae, Thanks so much for your comment. I’m sure Charlene will be as delighted as I am to have found you! Please accept my apologies for the really long delay in replying to you. I have had such bad internet connection problems for a very long time and have not been able to get back to the blog until today.

I have lots of Moyle info, not as much as I would like to have though 😉 and am happy to share what I have with you. We knew Frederick had gone to New Zealand also, like his and Johnson’s brother Joseph, but other than that do not know too much else about his life in New Zealand.

My other half Paul is your Moyle cousin (I’m the one doing the research though) and we are so pleased to have found you.

      Kind regards,

      Christine (rootsresearcher)
